What Is the Spring Professional Certification?

The VMware Spring Professional (exam code 2V0-72.22) is the official certification for Java developers who want to validate their expertise in the Spring Framework and Spring Boot ecosystem.

Originally issued by Pivotal, then VMware, and now managed by Broadcom, the current version is officially titled Spring Certified Professional 2024 v2. The exam questions are based on Spring Framework 5.3 and Spring Boot 2.7.

Unlike Oracle's Java certifications that test language syntax, the Spring Professional exam tests practical knowledge: how to wire beans, configure security, write testable code, and troubleshoot transaction behavior.

The exam is available worldwide through Pearson VUE — both at physical test centers and via online proctoring from home. It is conducted in English only, but the 130-minute time limit officially includes adequate time for non-native English speakers.

The official Minimally Qualified Candidate profile recommends at least 6–12 months of hands-on Spring experience. You should have both strong conceptual understanding and practical programming experience covering configuration, data access, REST, AOP, security, and the Spring testing framework.
